Attractions – what to do in Ubud

The Gianyar regency is highly recommended to be visited to encounter Balinese culture and the art creation. There are many art shops that can be visited for the art crafts and painting galleries. Ubud is the most famous area to visit. At Ubud, the Balinese art and creativity are grown up fast, starts from dance art, carving art, paintings, and many more. Ubud Palace is open for public to visit. Here, once a week, there are Balinese dancing performance to entertain the guests. Batubulan is famous with the Barong, Kecak and Legong Dance performance. But to watch the performance you have to come earlier, as the show performs around 09.30 AM. Along the Batubulan main street you may find stone and wood art craft, such as Ganesha, Buddha, Dewa and Dewi statues. Nearby this area there are some restaurants, luwak coffee store, convenience stores, and Balinese souvenir shops.

Don’t forget to step into Sukawati and Guwang Art Market, located on Jl. Raya Sukawati, across the Sukawati Traditional Market. Set in a new two-storey building, sells a wide variety of merchandises, ranging from paintings, statues, shirts, shorts, bags, sandals, to dance costumes, all at reasonable prices with made in Bali pattern. A large variety of woven baskets can be found here along with Balinese ceremonial items made from colorful prada (gold painted cloth). Guwang Art Market is only 2 km south of Sukawati market, which sells the same item. Don’t forget to bargain to get the best price and check carefully for the each item you buy.

Pura Goa Gajah, located in the village of Bedulu, Blahbatuh, Gianyar, is one of Bali heritage site, as a center of the kingdom of Bali Kuna. To enter this cave, visitors must climb dozen stairs. There is a relief which looks like mountain on the entrance of this cave. It was carved many designed on the relief like grove with the stick, close leaf, animal for example forest pig, tortoise and specters. The cave mouth is decorated by the bas-relief with the eye turn around to the right or west side.

Bali is cannot be divided with its ancient Balinese dance tradition. It is the part of Bali religious and artistic expression among Balinese people. For Balinese people, dancing is the offerings as well as they presenting offerings to their gods.

Nowadays we can see some famous Balinese dance, such as Pendet welcoming dance, Legong, Barong and Kecak Dance. You may catch these performances at Ubud and Batubulan area, and usually the dance starts from 6.30 PM. While at Denpasar area named Kesiman, the show starts from 09.30 AM.
